Brief information and technical specifications:

About Panerai:

Panerai was originally an Italian luxury watch brand, established by Giovanni Panerai, in Florence, in Italy, in 1860. Panerai is today a Swiss brand, Swiss owned, and Panerai relies exclusively on Swiss movements – some of them are in-house made, and quite many are ETA/Valjoux movements. Panerai has been Italian since 1860 and Swiss since 1997.

That’s what makes Panerai so special, and makes it a bit different from other Swiss luxury watch brands. Panerai is Swiss – and yet Italian. The watches are manufactured today in Neuchâtel in Switzerland.

Officine Panerai, or Panerai, is first and foremost famous for having been the official supplier of watches to the Italian navy of the early and mid 20th century.

About Panerai Luminor Marina:

The Panerai Luminor Marina Collection dates back to the 1940s and is characterized by a large crown protector, minimalist dial, fixed bezel and large burly leather straps.

Panerai Luminor Marina is indeed water resistant and some of their models have a depth rating of 300 meters/1,000 feet. Since they don’t have a timer/bezel, I wouldn’t recommend you to go diving with them, but you can absolutely go swimming and snorkeling with them.

Panerai Luminor Marina is also famous for having been Sylvester Stallone’s and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s watch of choice in several of their action movies of the 1990s.

Date Function:

  • Many of their watches have a date function and quite many of their models don’t. Panerai is famous for deliberately making their watches look like vintage watches with an “old” feel to them. That’s what defines the brand. Be prepared that many Panerai watches feel like old fashioned “low tech” watches. This is done deliberately by the Panerai brand to honor their iconic watches of the 1930s and 1940s.

Functions:

  • Very few Panerai watches have a chronograph function. Very few Panerai watches have a GMT function, a power reserve indicator, and a 24 hour indicator.
  • All Panerai watches lack a large second hand – they use a small second hand on a sub dial.
  • Many Panerais even lack a date function, and quite many Panerai watches use mechanical hand wind movements. Be prepared that many Panerai watches feel like old fashioned “low tech” watches. This is done deliberately by the Panerai brand to honor their iconic watches of the 1930s and 1940s.
