Brief information and technical specifications:

About Panerai:

Panerai was originally an Italian luxury watch brand, established by Giovanni Panerai, in Florence, in Italy, in 1860. Panerai is today a Swiss brand, Swiss owned, and Panerai relies exclusively on Swiss movements – some of them are in-house made, and quite many are ETA/Valjoux movements. Panerai has been Italian since 1860 and Swiss since 1997.

That’s what makes Panerai so special, and makes it a bit different from other Swiss luxury watch brands. Panerai is Swiss – and yet Italian. The watches are manufactured today in Neuchâtel in Switzerland.

Officine Panerai, or Panerai, is first and foremost famous for having been the official supplier of watches to the Italian navy of the early and mid 20th century.

About Panerai Radiomir:

The Panerai Radiomir is the oldest family or collection within the Panerai brand dating back to the 1930s, and it was the Panerai Radiomir that functioned as the Italian navy’s original military water resistant wristwatch.

What sets Panerai Radiomir apart from Panerai Luminor Marina, and Panerai Luminor Submersible, is that Panerai Radiomir lack’s Panerai’s characteristic crown protector, and has a more delicate build. The original Panerais that were used by the Italian frogmen, had no crown protector.

It’s true that Panerai Luminor Marina (and Submersible) are more famous and prestigious than Radiomir, but it’s really the Panerai Radiomir that is the real action hero of the Panerai brand. The frogmen of the Italian navy of the 1930s and 1940s used the Panerai Radiomir on their underwater missions.

Since Panerai Radiomir has no unidirectional timer/bezel, and has a water depth rating of 100 meters/330 feet, it means that Panerai Radiomir is suitable for swimming and snorkeling but not diving.
